The Purpose of the Heart Journal


Summary
Are we out of touch with our feelings? Do we substitute sensation for real feelings?

What is the purpose of The Heart Journal? The goal is to develop the ability to process emotions and feelings.

Every day that goes by that I suppress feelings, I may be compromising my ability to be spontaneous. Also, I may be doing damage to my ability to be creative, and also to work effectively with others in a community.

Getting involved in the writing and thinking activities within The Heart Journal gives us an opportunity to strengthen ourselves and our lives by means of a series of exercises that build self-awareness and emotional flexibility.

Benefit to the Learner
The Heart Journal will help the learner to process feelings and emotions, which gives the ability to be emotionally engaging and spontaneous. The learner will also be able to be a stronger thinker, creative problem-solver, and have more range with respect to emotional intelligence.



News, Part 1

Summary
Discussing what is accomplished with the heart journal and relating newspaper headlines with emotions.

Step-By-Step Process: Watch the Video

  1. Find a headline in a newspaper.
  2. Write the initial emotion that comes to mind.
  3. Think about the headline.
  4. Come back after 20 or 30 minutes and write down emotions after thinking about article. See if the emotions are the same.

Benefit to the Learner
The learner will be able to focus on authentic emotions.



News, Part 2

Summary
The design of current events/headline news to trigger emotional responses is to capture the audience, which may distance authentic feelings.

Step-By-Step Process: Watch the Video

  1. Scan current events/headline news.
  2. Write down the emotional response triggered by the current events/headline news.
  3. Think and uncover the origin of the memory and feelings in your personal life that are triggered by the current events/headline news.

Benefit to the Learner
The learner is able to observe and understand the purpose of current events/headline news is to trigger and manipulate emotions.



Significant Others

Summary
Trace the relationship with two or three family members starting with toddler years through adolescents that have influenced you the most and write down the memories of the actions that this person was doing.

Step-By-Step Process: Watch the Video

  1. First page – write down actions with your mother (or mother figure) during toddler, childhood, and adolescent years.
  2. Second page – write down actions with your father (or father figure) during toddler, childhood, and adolescent years.
  3. Look back and reflect on your journal entries. Be sure not to question or doubt yourself.

Benefit to the Learner
This process will help the learner understand the parallels between those actions and that of your feelings and emotions that is constructed consciously or unconsciously in your later life.



Places

Summary
Today’s heart journal deals with places.

Step-By-Step Process: Watch the Video

  1. Make a list of ten places that you may or may not have been to.
  2. List the immediate emotion response when thinking about the place.
  3. Then list the tastes, smells, textures, and colors, when you think of that place.
  4. Then think about how your emotion response may be intensified, heightened, or changed in some way.

Benefit to the Learner
The learner will learn how to gather information from their hearts.
